goTenna Inc

Founded in 2012, goTenna Inc builds mobile mesh networking devices and the Aspen Grove protocol that let smartphones exchange texts and GPS locations without cellular, Wi-Fi, or satellite networks.

goTenna Inc builds the technology that keeps people talking when the infrastructure around them has failed. Founded in 2012 in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the company has become the world's leading mobile mesh networking firm, producing off-grid connectivity solutions that allow users to send text messages and share GPS locations over peer-to-peer mesh networks - independent of cellular, Wi-Fi, or satellite systems. Its lightweight devices pair with smartphones to form self-organising networks in places where conventional communications do not reach, a capability demanded by professionals for whom a dropped signal is not an inconvenience but a risk.

The engineering substance lies in two places. The goTenna devices themselves translate smartphone interfaces into resilient hardware links, while Aspen Grove, the company's proprietary mesh networking protocol, advances the state of the art in decentralised communications. Together they cover a technical field spanning mobile mesh networking, peer-to-peer protocols, embedded devices and GPS location sharing - disciplines where correctness under adverse conditions matters more than throughput benchmarks.

That work serves more than 350 agencies worldwide across military and defence, law enforcement, emergency response, wildland firefighting and public safety, with a presence spanning the Eastern Seaboard of the United States and operations worldwide. In 2024 goTenna was acquired by Forterra. The underlying purpose has not shifted since its founding: enabling communication with loved ones and with emergency services precisely when traditional infrastructure has been overwhelmed.
