Target

Target is a major American retailer with nearly 2,000 stores and over $100 billion in revenue, building technology for digital commerce, supply chain, same-day delivery, curbside pickup, and sustainability.

Target is the seventh-largest retailer in the United States by sales as of 2024, with more than $100 billion in annual revenue in 2023 and nearly 2,000 stores across all 50 states. Founded in 1962, when its first store opened in Roseville, Minnesota, the company employs more than 400,000 team members and serves millions of guests every week, in-store and online. Its brand proposition - affordable pricing paired with curated product assortments, under the slogan "Expect More. Pay Less." - has made Target one of America's most recognised retail brands.

For engineers, the substance lies in the systems behind that scale. Target's technical work spans digital commerce, e-commerce and online retail, supply chain and logistics technology, same-day delivery technology, curbside pickup and order fulfillment technology, and sustainability technology. The company has invested billions in digital capabilities, and it operates more than 60 supply chain facilities nationwide to move goods from fulfilment to doorstep. Same-day delivery and curbside pickup services, built on that infrastructure, served millions of guests in 2023.

The digital shopping experience runs alongside the physical store estate rather than replacing it, meaning technology work is grounded in the interaction between nearly 2,000 brick-and-mortar locations and a high-volume online channel. Target Forward, the company's sustainability strategy, commits it to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. The Target Foundation has given millions to support education, food security, and arts programs.
