Atoms

Atoms builds physical automation - robotics, software, and infrastructure - across food, mining, and transport, through subsidiaries including CloudKitchens, Pronto AI, Otter, and Picnic.

Atoms, founded in 2017 by Travis Kalanick following his departure from Uber and formerly known as City Storage Systems, builds physical automation - robotics, software, and infrastructure - intended to digitise and automate work across food, mining, and transport. The company spent eight years operating in stealth before rebranding, and frames its technical ambition as the creation of a new class of computation for the real world: machines that sense, predict, and act within physical environments.

The engineering scope is unusually broad. Atoms works in robotics, machine perception, autonomous vehicles, and software infrastructure, and describes its subject matter as "gainfully employed robots" - specialised machines with productive jobs designed to bring abundance to their owners and society at large. Three operating verticals carry this work: Atoms Food, infrastructure for better food beginning with delivery-first kitchens built for modern restaurants; Atoms Mining, more productive mines to power Earth's industries; and Atoms Transport, described as a "wheelbase for robots" - transport infrastructure for robotic systems.

The portfolio includes six named subsidiaries: CloudKitchens, which operates delivery-first kitchen infrastructure for restaurants; Pronto AI, developing autonomous driving technology; Lab37, building real-world automation systems; Otter, restaurant and operations software; Picnic, food automation and robotics; and ProFood, food infrastructure. The stated aim across these businesses is to make industry more productive, reliable, and scalable.
